Learn how to circuit UPS or Power Inverter with household appliances like fans, tube lights, energy savers, computers etc. Connect your office equipment like servers, desktop computers and surveillance cameras to make sure that they are up and running in case of power failure or black out. Any kind of large and small devices and electrical equipment can be wired with UPS or power inverter as long as their combined load is within the capacity limit. So take precautions and connect devices that won’t overload the power backup system when power fails.
Method No. 1:
Without connecting “output neutral” of UPS or Power Inverter with appliances and directly providing common neutral of home, apartment or building.

UPS / Power Inverter Wiring Diagram 1
– If the above circuit does not work, take a piece of wire and connect “output neutral” of power inverter or UPS with neutral wiring of home. The circuit will be closed and appliances will start working. Now, if you do this, never ever, I repeat never ever reverse the polarity of input or output or you will not only cause the short circuit but also damage the UPS or Power Inverter. So, be careful.

========================================================================
Troubles with single line / phase wiring & Solution:
Sometimes, you need to disconnect UPS from the circuit. In that case, label the plugs for live and neutral wires and carefully connect them back. In this kind of wiring, make sure that input and output of UPS are aligned. Otherwise, the circuit will not be complete and UPS will not work. See the diagrams below for more understanding:
========================================================================
Method No. 2:
Circuiting UPS or Power Inverter with appliances by supplying both neutral and live wires coming directly from its output.

UPS / Power Inverter Wiring Diagram 3
– This is the simplest and straight forward method for connecting appliances with power inverters or UPS’. This type of wiring is especially required for those UPS’ which can not work with only phase wiring because such UPS’ are designed to disconnect both live and neutral circuits of input inside them when output is switched to batteries backup. If you want to connect sensitive electronic devices like servers, computers, TVs, sound systems, media players etc, you should prefer this type of wiring, or simply plug in using an Extension Cord.
Note: Red colour indicates the phase/live/hot/electricity providing wire and black color indicates the neutral/cold wire. Red arrows are representing phase terminals of UPS and black arrows are representing neutral terminals.
Safety: Methods described here are for reference purpose only. Make sure you get your UPS or Power Inverter circuited by a trained personnel.

Hi, Thanks for the great information. I have luminous inverter installed in my house. I checked the ground is working proper or not by connecting phase and ground using small wire inserting on any wall 3 pin socket and checking the current in any other wall 3 pin socket. The ground is working fine when main current is flowing in my home. But when on running battery if I use the same above method to check the ground, the current will be flowing in both phase and neutral but not in ground pin. I am using tester to check the current. Can you please help me why this is happening. I will provide more information if you need. I am not sure the method I am using to check the ground correct or not. Thanks
Talal A.
If tester is glowing with neutral, there is stray voltage in neutral caused by inverter. It’s not dangerous. Your appliances will work fine.

Sir,
Where I have to connect the output phase/live wire from inverter to the circuit breaker?
To the input of the breaker OR to the output?

Respected Sir, I have used the first method i.e, single phase line o/p to backup my appliances. But due to power surge on a rainy day, my inverter got damaged. How to protect my inverter from power surges? Should I go for the second method ie, neutral and earthing along with phase wire at the o/p of inverter. Will it help power surges and protect my inverter. Awaiting for your valuable reply.
Regards
Talal A.
Earthing won’t protect your inverter or other electronic devices from power surges.
There are surge protectors available in market and online. Buy one and route inverter input through that. If ever surge happens due to the lightning strike, it will cut off the supply and your inverter will be saved. You can also use that surge protector with other devices.

sir i have three electric power supply meters in house different portion
i have one 24 V, UPS i like to connect one UPS to different meters,
can i Connect UPS taking phase from one meter and neutral from other meters ?
Talal A.
Neutral is usually same for all the meters if wires are coming from same main supply lines.

Sir, I have connected my Luminous Zelio inverter using the 1st method. ie, only by connection single phase o/p. But I observed that when I pulled back input cable of the inverter and checked with tester both live and neutral pins got current in it. What can be the reason? I am running my LED TV and computer apart from other appliances. Is this 1st method safe or should switch to 2nd method to avoid any damage. Eagerly awaiting for your expert advice.
Talal A.
That’s due to the stray voltage. Most inverters produce it.

Hi , I want to install Inverter in my office , There is only one computer and 4-5 sets of Tubelight and 2-3 Fans. I want to connect Inverter to all these at office. Can control usage by putting off unwanted lights and Fans. I require to use only One desktop Computer , 2 light and One Fan. How do I wire it. What I have in mind is connect the Inverter between Main’s wire.
Talal A.
most inverters are designed to work by just supplying phase from output. The input neutral will automatically complete the circuit.

sir i have followed your professional expertise on inverter out put connections, never the less i have a question, please sir can the connection be reversed without methed 1 / 2 line connection through same main wall socket of input for output distributions. Thank you sir.

Can I connect linein and lineout with the same line connection, means that when power supply is there battery will be charged when power supply off battery charge is supplied to light and fan its possible ?
Talal A.
No. It’s not safe. it will damage your power inverter.
Power input will be fed from power source (Distribution box or normal power socket) and output will be connected to fans and lights with separate wire. See detailed description above.

In my Home , we have 3 Ph supply from Elec Board. Loads are connected in each Phase through a Rotary switch. If any Phase fails, Load connected to the phase will be transferred to live phase through Rotary switch.
We also have single Phase 800 VA UPS connected to 1 phase. Few tube lights and fans have been connected to UPS.
Do we need to earth the neutral at our meter or at UPS output neutral?
Is multiple neutral earthing a good option ?
Talal A.
Did you supply just phase (live wire) to lights and fans?
The UPS input will automatically complete the circuit (if it supports)
Earth input or output whichever you want.

i had posted a query about connecting 2 inverters to a single battery.
i just want to add that-
Suppose i disconnect the first floor inverter & connect a single wire from the ground floor inverter to the first floor same as that single wire from inverter to the ground floor inverter. means two wires from inverter output from same point & one going to ground floor & other going to first floor.
will it work & not cause any problem ?
Talal A.
Yes you can wire two floors (even with different electric meters) with single power inverter. You need to supply phase (live wire) to all the appliances you want to run on both floors. You also need to connect output (or input) neutral of inverter to the first floor neutral to complete the circuit.
MOHAN NEGI
i had tried it & got it done by electrician but now i see that my ground floor meter is showing Earth leakage & Rev LED is also on many a times. means all the three LEDs are glowing . what should be the solution
Talal A.
Turn off all lights and devices attached to inverter and see if electric meter slows down.
Inverters often produce stray voltage in neutrals that cause the problem.
If problem persists, undo the wiring and buy new battery for other inverter to avoid any troubles.
MOHAN NEGI
Your technical advises are really interesting & helpful. thats’why i also want to ask the solution of my problem. hope you will guide me
i have 2 different power supplies (different electricity meters) at different floors & both are having inverters. one of my inverter battery is down & needs replacement. To avoid extra expenditure on battery can i connect both inverters to a single battery & how ? if not then why? & what is the solution

Sir recently installed APC UPS in my house. With double lining of separate neutral. But in my UPS socket, when AC is activate tester screw driver shows no charge when switch is off and charge in phase terminal when on. But when UPS is active, tester shows charge in both terminal regardless switches are on or off. What could be the possible cause of this issue?
Talal A.
That’s due to the stray voltage in input/output neutral.

i am using 1100va luminous zelio inverter i plugged inverter 6amp 3pin to my room switch board socket, i draw 1mm size wire from main DP box,my question is what’s the right size of wire that i should use from DP box, because in that room with same switch box another electronics load of 600watts is connected. During summer in our area voltage drop to 120 volts. if i give maximum load on 1mm is it ok?
Talal A.
The quality of wire matters the most. This much thick wire may bear the load that you mentioned if it is made of pure copper.
But i will recommend to use thicker wire for safety.

Sir, I am using homage UPS and have following problem since last night. Light from Grid Station is available but appliances (Bulb and Fan etc) are still running on UPS backup power supply. I tried to disconnect UPS input power supply and tried to complete circuit with simple plug to run on appliances on main power supply, but still only things that are not backed up with UPS wiring are switching on and remaining which are wired to run UPS backup are not running on main AC power supply. Can you suggest what can be the problem. Is there possibility that the AC power socket for UPS input is no more working and needs to be replaced?

Dear Sir,
I am also having the similar issue. My house having two portions with two separate mains. But, I have connected my UPS to both the portions, when ever required I am switching on and off those appliances. But, input power to the inverter from one meter only, that particular portion I am getting more bill when compared to other portion. The entire load on that meter. Can I connect my single ups to both the meters. you have suggested ” Divide load over days” could you please elaborate.
Talal A.
Install a ‘change over switch’ at UPS input. The change over switch can be fed two mains. Run UPS on one main for 15 days and then switch over to other main for other 15 days.

I am having a inverter which is already connected in my home now my load demand is increasing so State electricity Board has told to take another Supply new Supply. But My old Supply is connected to Inverter can I connected this new supply to my inverter. The Purpose is Ground floor should have Different Supply and First Floor should have different supply and billing will be different but Inverter will be common .
Talal A.
You can divide the load over days like running inverter for 15 days on one supply and another 15 on second one.

I have a Luminous Square Wave Inverter 975 VA connected with Method 1 ie. Single live wire connection. Many a times, when I leave home for long, I switch off the output from Inverter and keep the input line ON.
The line installation has a 10 Amps MCB. It Trips many a times under this condition causing likely hood of slow battery discharge.
Can you please tell me what can be the cause and solution. All power connections remain OFF during this.
Talal A.
Even flooded lead acid batteries can retain charge for over a month. VRLA batteries have better tendency to retain charge. So just charge the batteries to full and shutdown inverter completely before leaving.

Hi,
I wanted to ask why is it that UPS works only when its is plugged into the socket in a certain direction, and not in the opposite direction? I understand that electricians only give one wire (phase) from the appliances to the UPS backup. But how is it able to provide voltage to the other wire? Does it get one wire from the input and the other from the output? I have noticed that the UPS doesn’t work if the input cable is pulled from the socket, but not when the socket switch is simply turned off. This suggests that there must be some phase relationship between input and output of a UPS, but I still don’t understand the concept very clearly. Could you please elaborate on that?
Thanks a lot!
P.S: I’m not trying to install a UPS or anything. I only wish to understand the theory behind it.
Talal A.
Phase is provided from output. Neutral is provided by input. The circuit completes and devices start working.
Most power inverters are designed to close the circuit with only phase output and neutral input.
In your room switch boards, the switch only cuts off the phase supply to socket which means neutral is always available.
Tahir
Thanks a lot, Mr. Talal. I appreciate it

Dear you technical advises are really helpful as I am thoroughly following your threads .
I need advise on ;
I bought APC Sine-wave ups (48V)
the Electrition/shopkeeper told me that after you plug in the main wire (input) , then take a Tester and see in the Output which of the two wires is phase wire , then connect the phase wire to the socket’s phase wire to deliver the Output to home.
My question here is that , after plugging in the ups wire to power socket, I took the tester to see which one in the output is phase but I found out that both output wires have current in it . My batteries are not attached while doing this as I have 2 batteries and waiting to buy 2 more to make a 48volt battery in series)
So, do you think after connecting the ups to 4batteries , the output of you ups will make one phase and other neutral ?
Talal A.
Make sure you don’t short the wires (phase and neutral connected together) as that will damage UPS. If both output (phase and neutral) are lighting the tester then neutral has got stray voltage in it. Usually Live and neutral is mentioned on output of every UPS. You just need to find correct input phase (if it is not mentioned). If you have got multimeter, you can easily find what is what.
Syed Qadir shah
Thanks a lot Talal , it’s a stray current, if you have time then just reply me inshort how to remove the stray current in my APC ups,

hi,
with reference to below post, is Stray voltage dangerous for devices? or should i simply avoid it?
I have homage inverter installed at home. When Main Electricity OFF inverter work perfect but there is only 1 problem that is small voltage or current is still there in those sockets where inverter is not connected and when I pull inverter power plug or switch OFF completely then that voltage or current disappear.
I performed some tests to pin point the issue but can’t find the issue.
I switch OFF inverter from power button on inverter and voltage or current disappears.
I disconnected input L (Red) wire but inverter is ON (backup mode) and voltage or current still there.
I disconnected input N (black) wire but inverter is ON (backup mode) and voltage or current disappears.
This happen only when main electricity is OFF.
thanks.
Talal A.
That stray voltage is produced by your inverter when it is providing backup. Stray current is not harmful for devices but can be for humans. Proper earthing can help you get rid of it.

Thank you very much for this wonderful information. I am not technical person but I need your expert solution on my inverter issue. I have low voltage issue on main line 140-160. I have a 5kva pure Sinewave inverter installed with common neutral method. To improve voltage I added one 10kva stabilizer and connect inverter on it. When grid is on I get no improvement in voltage but when electricity goes all fans lights becomes brighter on battery power which I actually want during my grid power.
Main grid–10 kva stabilizer–5kva inverter–appliances
Talal A.
Your stabilizer is useless. It is not stepping up the voltage properly. Change that with some quality product.

How can i check my inverter is Pure sine wave or Square wave, it might be a straight forward answer by using the model number we can find but its old one and i am not able to find online. The inverter is Brila Power 800 VA Home Ups. Is there any way to check without taking the unit to service center.
Talal A.
Use Oscilloscope for that purpose.
judeson
Use a multimeter which is not a true rms . If the multimetre shows wrong voltage relative to the true rms meter then it is not a pure sine wave
Rahul Krishna Agarwal
Normally in case of square wave Inverter, on inverter power, there will be noise in Fans specially when they are running slower.

I myself have wired my two rooms. Now I have purchased luminous ups and want to install in my house with method-1 or method-2 as explained by you above. I understand both diagram. I just want to clarify from you that I will have to take Single live wire from UPS out put and twist with fan switch terminal and bulb switch terminal point or twist with live wire which are coming from main board to Rooms. Hello Sir
I installed a luminous inverter of 800va, using 1st method mentioned. Now what whenever the mains goes out the inverter cannot start by itself and instead it shows overload. Now when i switch of the isolator and restart the inverter it works and i get the current. But still then inverter blinks every after few seconds “on main” led blinks on and power supply is also blinks along with that.

Hello Sir
I recently installed a 5kva Genus inverter with 8 batteries in my house. It was installed like in Method 1. However, I observed that sometimes, when the public main goes off, the UPS would go into “Short Circuit Protection”. The occurrence is becoming frequent and is of concern to me. What can I do about this? Thanks.

Dear friend ,
Rccb is connected in main . the connection of UPS always should be in series . means Disconnect your mains from MCB first connect it to UPS i/p through sufficient mcb
Take o/p from UPS & Connect it to mains i/p .so if there is any fault occur or leakage current will pass your RCCB will Trip & the whole supply will isolates . other wise it will be Risky,
